About the artwork: Henricus Hondius’ Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica Tabula (1630) is one of the most celebrated world maps of the Dutch Golden Age. Building on the legacy of his father, Jodocus Hondius, and Gerardus Mercator, Henricus created a richly decorated double‑hemisphere map that epitomised the baroque style of cartography. The borders feature allegories of the four elements, portraits of Mercator, Ptolemy, Julius Caesar, and Jodocus Hondius, and vignettes of mythological and maritime scenes.
Cartographically, the map is notable for its depiction of California as an island, its early representation of Australia’s coastline, and its intricate renderings of North America’s rivers and lakes. Decorative sea monsters, sailing vessels, and celestial motifs add to its allure, making it both a scientific document and a work of art. This was also the first widely available world map in an atlas, cementing its place in cartographic history.
Why it’s a statement piece: At 529 pieces, this is the largest and most ambitious puzzle in the collection to date. Its scale, historical depth, and elaborate design make it a centrepiece for puzzlers and collectors alike — a tactile journey through the artistry and imagination of 17th‑century mapmaking.
Gift pairing: Once completed, Orbis Geographica becomes a commanding artwork in its own right. For a gift that feels complete, pair it with another heritage map puzzle (such as Blaeu or Speed) to create a curated cartography set, or present it as a standalone collector’s edition — a true conversation piece for lovers of history, geography, and design.
