About the Artist
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was one of the last great masters of the ukiyo‑e tradition of Japanese woodblock printing. Renowned for his lyrical landscapes and atmospheric use of colour, Hiroshige captured the fleeting beauty of everyday life and the natural world. His most famous series, The Fifty‑Three Stations of the Tōkaidō, revolutionised landscape art in Japan and influenced Western Impressionists such as Monet and Van Gogh.
Kameido Tenjin Shrine comes from his celebrated series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856–1858), which documented the sights of Edo (modern‑day Tokyo) with poetic sensitivity. The print depicts the famous wisteria trellis at Kameido Tenjin Shrine, a site beloved for springtime blossoms and spiritual reflection.
By puzzling this artwork, you’re engaging with a fragment of Edo‑period culture — a piece of art history that continues to inspire collectors and artists worldwide.
